Refugee and Humanitarian Visas - Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the right visa for me?
Many more people apply than there are places in Australia’s global resettlement program, and we are only able to assist in resettlement of the most deserving cases. The Embassy works closely with the UNHCR to identify deserving cases. If you feel you are a woman at risk, or have other claims of merit you should contact UNHCR Amman directly.
If you believe you qualify for another type of visa, you should not apply for a refugee and humanitarian visa.
Who can apply?
You need to be outside your country of usual residence. This means Jordanians are not eligible in Jordan, nor are Iraqis who remain in Iraq or who return to Iraq after lodging their application. This applies to all family members included in the application.
Do I need a proposer?
Your proposer is a person who is an Australian citizen, a citizen of New Zealand or a permanent resident based in Australia, who can assist you with resettlement in Australia. By signing a proposal form 681, your proposer agrees that they are willing and able to provide financial and accommodation support to you and your family should you be resettled in Australia. Many proposers are close relatives, but a proposer can also be a representative of a community organisation. While you can apply without a proposer, cases without any link to Australia are unlikely to succeed. Your proposer can download form 681 from the DIAC website www.immi.gov.au.
Can someone help me? Are there any fees?
You can be assisted by any non-embassy employee in completing your application, however as we are examining your personal circumstances you need to ensure that all information in the application is true and correct. There is no fee for the application or forms, however authorised translators may charge for their services.
Will I be interviewed? And after?
You will be contacted by mail or phone to attend an interview or should other information be required.
If, following an interview, your case is determined to meet threshold requirements, you will be asked to undertake medical and other checks. Details of these requirements will be provided at that time should your application proceed. Similarly, if you meet all requirements for grant of a visa, you will be provided with settlement information. For information about life in Australia (in Arabic and other languages).
